The Church of Santo Spirito is adjacent to the monastery. The warm-coloured sandstone facade has an austere Gothic portal and a beautiful rose window which are the only surviving medieval details. On entering the church one is overwhelmed by an explosion of baroque decorations and stuccoes which strongly contrast the sobriety of the facade. The church has a single nave, typical of the medieval era, and is richly decorated. The lateral walls are decorated with stuccoes representing scenes of the infancy of Christ whilst the choir behind the altar is dominated by the imposing “Triumph of the Holy Spirit”: a suggestive masterpiece of extreme beauty and complexity. The author of the stuccoes is believed to be Giacomo Serpotta, a famous sculptor of the 18th century from Palermo and the most renowned Sicilian artist of his time. Overhead there is a decorated coffered wooden ceiling and the beauty of the church is completed by two large paintings and a marble statue of a Madonna with Child attributed to Gagini, another renowned Sicilian sculptor of the 16th century. Don’t leave without tasting the nun’s sweets.
The Church of Santo Spirito is part of the historical complex of the Monastery of Santo Spirito. Vistors are welcome but should respect the opening times established by the monastery’s Cistercian nuns.
