Museum of Pirandello
Agrigento

recommended visit time
1 hour

On a plain overlooking the sea, in the countryside between Agrigento and Porto Empedocle, lies a solitary country house: this is where the Nobel playwright Luigi Pirandello, one of the most prominent literary personalities of the twentieth century, was born. After the recent maintenance, adaptation and removal of architectural barriers, the Pirandello house-museum now also offers an immersive and multimedia itinerary, audiovisual archive materials and specially composed music. The narrative voice of Leo Gullotta guides the visit between the different locations. A Smartphone application allows you to enjoy, both inside and outside the museum, various in-depth content including texts, audio and augmented reality. Soon after the second world war the house was restored for the first time and in 1949 it was declared a national monument and turned into a museum. To this day it exhibits manuscripts, photographs of the Pirandello family and memorable moments of the playwright’s life, personal letters, a collection of programs and posters of theatrical productions and much  more. This is the perfect spot to start a literary journey and explore the places, rooms and countryside which have inspired Pirandello’s creative imagination. A documentary film allows visitors to view the most significant events in Pirandello’s life, such as the ceremony of the Nobel Award in 1934. His ashes are buried under a large stone not far from the dwelling where he was born, according to his last will: ”take my ashes to Sicily and  seal them in a rough rock in the countryside of Girgenti, where I was born.” In the centre of Agrigento there is a Library dedicated entirely to his work: it is located in via Imera and contains all his books and many precious documents. The Municipal Theatre, situated in the Municipality in Piazza Pirandello, is also entitled to Luigi Pirandello and is open to visitors.
