Explore Agrigento’s underground world from the Historic Center to the Valley of the Temples

Immerse yourself in the hidden world of Agrigento and discover its secret places with three enchanting underground tours. Thanks to the expert speleologists of Agrigento Sotterranea, you will explore three hypogea carved into the rock at different times, narrating the millenary history of Agrigento: from medieval Girgenti to greek Akragas. Begin your exploration:

1. Bishop’s Hypogeum: Hidden beneath the majestic Bishop’s Palace, between the Diocesan Museum and the Cathedral, you will walk among the  ancient remains of warehouses and homes that once served as secret passages, connecting the Duomo area with the north side of the hill.

2. Giacatello Hypogeum: Continue your journey in the mysterious Giacatello Hypogeum, located near the Archaeological Museum. Wander among the ancient pillars supporting the spaces of this fascinating cavity-cistern, discovering clues of its different uses during the Greek and Roman eras.

3. Kolymbethra Hypogeum: Finally, be enchanted by the Kolymbethra Hypogeum, the evocative underground path connecting the Kolymbethra Garden, managed by the FAI, to the area dedicated to chthonic deities in the Valley of the Temples. This hypogeum was part of a vast network of underground aqueducts designed in 480 B.C. by the architect Feace to ensure water supply to ancient Akragas during its peak.

Choose the visit formula you prefer and discover the hidden side of a city rich in history and mystery.

Each guided tour lasts about 30 to 45 minutes and must be booked at least one day in advance.

Recommended: comfortable clothing, sneakers or trekking shoes. The visit will be preceded by a brief preparation session with information, behavior guidelines, and the provision of a protective helmet. Participants must arrange their own transportation to and from the sites.

VISIT 1. Bishop’s Hypogeum. Duration 30 minutes.

The guided tour of the hypogeum is part of the “art & faith routes” of the MUDIA – Diocesan Museum of Agrigento.

Ticket: €10 per person (Reductions available for minors accompanied by an adult)

Availability: daily from 4:30 PM to 6:45 PM. Tours start at 4:30 PM and then approximately every 45 minutes. Meeting point: Via Duomo 106.

 

VISIT 2. Giacatello Hypogeum. Duration 30 minutes.

The guided tour experience is available on request and conducted in collaboration with CoopCulture.

 

VISIT 3. Kolymbethra Hypogeum. Duration 45 minutes.

The guided tour experience is conducted in collaboration with FAI – Kolymbethra Garden.

Ticket: €10 per person, includes the speleological visit to the Kolymbethra Hypogeum and a guided tour of the Garden: the green heart of the Valley of the Temples, one of the 10 most beautiful gardens in Italy managed by FAI. Discounts available for FAI members and accompanied minors.
